In 2011 MotorSport Vision Racing (MSVR), the race organising division of major circuit owner/operator MSV, announced the launch of a new single seater series - F3 Cup. After a successful inaugural season MSVR was delighted to announce that F3 Cup was awarded approval by the MSA for full Championship status in 2012 as part of the series' expansion plans. This is set to continue for the fifth season in 2016.
F3 Cup caters for Formula 3 chassis built after 1980 and before 2012, with a race calendar consisting of the leading UK circuits plus an overseas round. Since 2015, competitors with National B-grade race licences have been eligible to compete, opening up the high-tech world of Formula 3 racing to more drivers than ever before. 2016 sees the introduction of the new F3 Open class, permitting post-2005 F3 cars running 'stock' 2000cc engines to compete, further reducing costs.
The budget required for a full season in F3 Cup is a lot less than you might think:
- Budgets range from £18,000 for a self-run car or £45,000 for a fully supported arrive and drive deal with a team
- Eligible F3 cars are available to purchase from just £12,000. The series consists of three classes to cover cars from 1st January 1981 - 31st December 2011, plus the aforementioned F3 Open class and an Invitation Class for other Formula 3 cars at the organisers discretion
- Engine rebuilds for F3-spec engines are typically £8,000 - £10,000 and should be sufficient for at least two full seasons
- Pirelli control tyres are limited to one new set for each race meeting, however many drivers make a set last two or three meetings, if not more
- There is also a large network of support and advice available through existing competitors for everything to do with running the cars, from setup to spares

F3 Cup is proud to welcome our partners for the 2016 season:
Stand 21 will present vouchers to the top three in the 2016 F3 Cup Championship and to the winning team through its Safety Foundation.
"As a motorsport safety source, the Stand 21 safety foundation, "Racing Goes Safer!" is a non-profit organization (application pending) with a primary purpose of promoting enhanced motorsports safety. Achieving this goal in collaboration with medical and scientific bodies, as well as with major series' organizers (FIA, SFI, NHRA, SCTA, SCCA, SCORE…) in order to bring awareness of safety issues, and solutions to the forefront of the motorsports world.
By gathering and consolidating data and experiences collected by sanctioning bodies, universities, and medical research groups, the foundation is dedicated to sharing this information by educating, and listening to the Motorsport community worldwide.
This motorsport safety foundation is crucial more than ever, considering that in 1970 they were a few thousand racecar drivers competing worldwide, and today the community is closer to 1.5 million and 99% of them are "gentlemen drivers".
Radical Sportscars have joined forces with F3 Cup to award this year's champion a test drive in a LMP-style Radical race car. With single seater drivers increasingly moving into sportscar racing to advance their careers, the one day test in an top-spec Radical will be the perfect introduction to the category for the champion. These cars are primarily found in the European Masters, Radical's top level pan-European championship, which visits prestigious circuits such as Monza, Nürburging and Brands Hatch.
Phil Abbott, Radical Sportscars' co-founder, said: "Radical is delighted to offer the F3 Cup champion the opportunity to test the iconic SR8 RX, delivering LMP2 pace to racers around the world. We've been impressed with the level and breadth of talent on the F3 Cup grid - with their experience of high-performance single-seater racing the champion should have no problems getting to grips with the 430bhp SR8 RX straight away. And, get a useful insight into the world of international sportscar competition."
Pirelli Tyres was appointed as the control tyre supplier from the 2015 season. All F3 Cup cars will run on Pirelli P Zero F3 tyres, whose performance and durability has been proven testing in Europe and racing in the Brazilian F3 Championship, won in 2014 by Pedro Piquet, son of triple World Champion Nelson Piquet.
Pirelli tyres were selected by F3 Cup promoter MSVR for their high levels of grip and excellent durability. Compared with F3 Cup's previous tyre, they will also be offered at marginally lower cost - consistent with the series' role in providing cost-conscious and affordable racing in state-of-the-art F3 single-seaters.
This new affiliation with motorsport's premier tyre manufacturer - Pirelli is supplier to the GP3, GP2 and F1 championships - will also ensure excellent customer service for F3 Cup's participating teams. Pirelli will provide support from the same facility in Didcot, Oxfordshire, that coordinates its F1 tyre operations.
Anglo American Oil will continue to supply their Sunoco race fuel as the control fuel for F3 Cup in 2016, meaning drivers will again be eligible for the Sunoco 200 Challenge, whose highest points-scorer wins a drive in the SportsCar 200 Championship race at Daytona International Speedway, Florida, on the same weekend as the Rolex 24 race.
