Sebastiani extends championship lead at Silverstone

F3 Cup's first race of the weekend this morning (2 July) produced nothing short of the excitement expected when a grid of 20 Formula 3 cars tackles the hallowed Silverstone GP circuit. The grid is believed to be the biggest F3 grid anywhere in the world this weekend.

The drivers formed up under sunny skies in Northamptonshire, with Wade Eastwood and Shane Kelly on the front row. As the lights went out, Kelly struggled to get his UWR Dallara off the line allowing Eastwood, Sebastiani and Watts to jump to the lead of the race.

Eastwood wasted no time in stretching his lead at the front of the pack, as Watts, in third, put the pressure on Sebastiani. Kelly set about making up for his poor start, and having dropped to nearly the very back of the pack began to work his way into the top 10, setting the fastest lap on the way.

As Sebastiani and Watts continued to fight for second place, a three-way battle for fourth began to emerge between George Line, James Heffernan and Kelly. The two CF Racing drivers' tussle allowed Kelly to catch them, and Heffernan soon found himself having to change tact to defend from the UWR driver, rather than fight with his team mate.

Kelly would ultimately pass Heffernan but by that point Line had escaped his clutches, finishing fifth behind Daryl Jones. Eastwood made it four wins from four at Silverstone, with Sebastiani holding off Watts until the very end.

Speaking on the podium, Eastwood said, "I tried to set a few fast laps initially, saw Jacopo behind me, so I tried to get a little bit of a gap to him and then just kept the times in the low 58s to save the tyres. The car was amazingly balanced, the team did a great job."

F3 Cup's final race of the weekend is scheduled for 15:25 this afternoon. Follow along at
