04/01/12 - F3 Cup star and Sunoco Grand-Am 200 Challenge winner Aaron Steele will make a trip across the Atlantic this week for his first taste of Daytona in preparation for his prize drive at the prestigious American circuit.
The 23-year-old proved to be the star performer in the MSVR run F3 Cup last year winning 14 of 18 races, which helped him claim the coveted Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 Challenge and a fully paid drive at the Daytona 24 Hours event on January 28, in addition to his F2 test drive. In a bid to gather valuable circuit knowledge, the Kent driver will take part in the three day 'Roar before the 24' test which begins on Friday and concludes on Sunday.
Steele will join up with Mitchum Motorsport, who will provide a race prepared Chevrolet Camaro for him to make his Daytona debut by competing in the Sunoco Grand-Am 200 support race for the famous Daytona 24 Hours main event.
A delighted Steele said: "I really can't wait to fly out to Daytona for a couple of test days in the car prior to the race at the end of the month. It's going to be a huge advantage for when I go back there, I'm expecting it's going to be a massive spectacle when I first arrive at the track and I'm sure I'll be in awe."
"One of the best parts of the test however is the predicted weather, 24 degrees and sunny a far cry from the windy rainy conditions currently battering the UK, which should also give me plenty of good running in the car to fully acclimatize."
Despite a dramatic difference between the familiar surroundings of a F3 car and the Chevrolet Camaro, Anders Hildebrand (MD Anglo American Oil) is confident Steele will shine.
He said: "Aaron is a former McLaren Young Driver nominee and as such has been previously recognised for his speed and talent. I'm sure that although a Camaro is totally different to a Formula 3 car Aaron will quickly get up to speed. We are very pleased to work with Mitchum Motorsport for this occasion and I am very confident that they will provide a race winning package for us."
