19/11/12 - F3 Cup guest driver Antonio Felix Da Costa showed his class by storming to a highly impressive double win at the showpiece Macau GP last weekend (17-18 November).
The talented 21-year-old Red Bull young driver was only eligible to take part in the prestigious event after competing in the final round of the F3 Cup at Snetterton 300 with Carlin last month. Despite limited F3 running this year, Da Costa and his Carlin team blitzed the opposition on the challenging street circuit coming away with two victories.
The Portuguese driver, who was making his first visit to the venue, wasted little time in qualifying as he topped the timesheets on Thursday. Fellow F3 Cup guest drivers Alex Lynn and Kevin Korjus also made an impression qualifying fourth and 20th respectively for Fortec Motorsports and Double R Racing. The final qualifying session on Friday proved to be a bigger challenge for Carlin's Da Costa with three red flags disrupting the session. Da Costa could only set the sixth quickest time but his effort from the previous session was good enough to secure a front row start from second. However, F3 Cup's Spa double winner Lynn posted the quickest time from the two sessions to grab pole by two tenths of a second.
Da Costa made a strong start to the qualification race but it was Felix Rosenqvist who briefly took the lead at turn one. Polesitter Lynn dropped to third but it didn't take long for Da Costa to sweep through into the lead later on during the opening lap. From their Da Costa controlled the race and he went on to take victory from Rosenqvist and Lynn. Sunday's race saw Da Costa breeze to a lights-to-flag victory finishing once again in front of Rosenqvist and Lynn.
A delighted Da Costa said: "I'm speechless but at the same time there's so much to say. I was on the limit the whole race and Felix and Alex gave a really good fight. Thank you to the team and to Volkswagen for both a fantastic package and the opportunity to race here this week. It was an unbelievable weekend. So many amazing names have won this event, and it's incredible that my name has been added to that list as well."
Following the triumph, Da Costa now adds his name to list of previous winners which include F1 legends Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard.
On behalf of all the staff at F3 Cup and MSVR, we would like to congratulate Da Costa and Lynn on their achievements in Macau.
