21/03/2012 - Experienced club racer Robbie Watts has confirmed plans for an assault on the 2012 F3 Cup Championship after enjoying a foray in the series last year.
The Southend racer, who made his debut in the F3 Cup at Brands Hatch last season, has purchased a Dallara F306 in the close season in a bid to challenge the Cup Class, competing in the majority of the 18 races.
Watts will bring a wealth of experience to the F3 Cup after claiming back-to-back titles in the Roadsports Championship in 2003 and 2004 and he finished the runner-up in the Formula 4 Championship in 2010. With a new car eligible for the Cup Class, for cars built from 2002-2007, he hopes to be fighting at the sharp end this season.
He said: "I think the championship has got fantastic potential, it's great for guys like me who are old in the tooth as there are not too many young drivers. If we get out for Oulton Park and get the car working well then hopefully we will be knocking on the door for the championship. This year will be a bit of a learning curve with the Dallara, as it is very different to the Lola I previously raced, but next year will be a full championship assault."
The Essex driver is expected to line up on the grid when the F3 Cup season begins at Cheshire's Oulton Park on Easter Monday.
