22/09/12 - The F3 Cup's three championship hopefuls have labelled today's race at Silverstone GP as crunch time in their quest for the coveted crown.
Chris Dittmann, Tristan Cliffe and Gino Ussi are all in the frame to become the inaugural F3 Cup champion and the result of today's race at the Northamptonshire circuit could go a long way in deciding the 2012 champion.
A class win for Dittmann in Friday's race has given the Tewkesbury man the lead in the championship standings which was previously held by Cliffe. Despite moving into a 9.5 point lead, he admits there is no way he can afford to relax today. The CDR driver will start from fourth on the grid.
Dittmann said: "It's make or break time. We are very close on the times between me Gino and Tristan so it should be a great race and fingers crossed I come away with some points."
This is a view echoed by Grays Motorsport's Ussi, who has stormed into the title race with a series of strong results. The Italian finished fourth yesterday picking up a handful of vital points to keep him in touch with leader Dittmann. The former Formula Palmer Audi front runner, who will start from fifth, believes all three title contenders are starting to feel the pressure.
Ussi said: "This is crunch time. All three of us are going to be feeling it in terms of the championship. This is about level heads, courage and sense. I'm feeling good about it."
Omicron Motorsport's Cliffe lost his grip on the championship lead with a disappointing ninth place finish after being hampered by a misfire yesterday. However, the 30-year-old, who will start from sixth on the grid, is still confident about his chances of landing the title and feels it will go down to the wire. Cliffe will start from sixth on the grid directly behind his two rivals.
He said: "It's going down to the wire this one and I think it will be settled at Snetterton but the races at Silverstone are massively important. It is a case of doing what we can and finish races with as many points as possible. It is a simple as that."
Today's F3 Cup race at the famous Silverstone GP circuit will begin at 11:10pm.
