Alice Powell will return to GP3 action at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi this weekend with Bamboo Engineering, just one week after finishing second to Alex Craven in the final championship standings.

She will face Carlos Sainz Jnr for the second weekend in a row after the Red Bull Junior Team driver joined the F3 Cup grid in order to qualify for the Macau Grand Prix. Sainz won twice in a newer Dallara F308, over one minute clear of the eighth-placed Powell in race one and 36 seconds clear of Powell in third in race two.

The Chipping Norton-based 20-year-old has previously raced in the F1-supporting series with Status GP in 2012, when she became the first female to score points after an eighth place finish at Monza. Powell then joined F3 Cup with Mark Bailey Racing for 2013, helping them to the Teams' championship alongside Stuart Wiltshire, Frank Thomas and Nick Robinson.

Powell, a BRDC Rising Star, had a dominant start in the UK's most cost-effective F3 championship by winning twice at the opening round of the year at Oulton Park. The brace was the first of five wins throughout the year that forced a final race shoot-out for the title with eventual winner Alex Craven and 2012 runner-up Tristan Cliffe.

Snetterton hosted the final round of the season and Powell needed to match Craven's results to be crowned champion. But, she fell short as Craven collected two second places ahead of the fifth and third placed Powell.

Her season of closely-fought F3 Cup racing stands her in good stead for a return to GP3, where just eight seconds covered the top nine at Monza last month.

F3 Cup provides drivers of all abilities a cost-effective way to race F3 machinery up to the Dallara F307 and is the perfect stepping stone for young drivers to hone their single seater skills on a budget.
