First win for Craven tightens battle at the top

05/06/13 – Alex Craven took his first win for two years to continue his brilliant start to the 2013 F3 Cup season.

Alex Craven took his first win for two years to continue his brilliant start to the 2013 F3 Cup season.

The Lanan Racing front-runner has strengthened his position in second place after controlling matters in the first race of round three at Brands Hatch Indy last weekend. Championship leader Alice Powell finished back in fourth after only getting to grips with the borrowed Frank Thomas car in the morning's qualifying.

"It's great to get the win. I haven't won a race since 2011 so it's nice. It's probably closed the gap slightly at the front and pulled away a little from the guys behind which is really good." Alex said.

Craven managed to get a good start in race two to leapfrog the wheel-spinning Tristan Cliffe but he couldn't find a way past Powell around the fast Indy layout and had to settle for second.

"There wasn't much I could do except stay close behind Alice really. I think I had one opportunity where I was semi-close but I wasn't close enough into Paddock Hill. Apart from that it was just push and hope she makes a mistake but obviously she didn't."

The next round is at the former home of F1 in Belgium, Zolder, a circuit new to most F3 Cup drivers. Craven will take the confidence of a race win across the channel with him and the benefit of a view of the famous track from behind the handlebars of a pushbike.

"I'm going to Zolder two or three days early with Ridley Bikes who are based near the circuit so we're testing some bikes at the track. It should be good; I'm looking forward to it."

Round four of the F3 Cup season is at Circuit Zolder in Belgium on 29/30 June.
