Mark Bailey signed off his motorsport career by sealing the 2013 F3 Cup Teams' Championship. The experienced team owner announced last month he will be retiring at the end of the season.
Drivers Alice Powell, Stuart Wiltshire, Nick Robinson and Frank Thomas have all played their part in Mark Bailey Racing's impressive haul this season, though it was championship runner-up Alice Powell who picked up the vast majority of the squad's points.
Wiltshire's season continued to improve as the year wore on, fighting for top six finishes in each of his last four rounds. Robinson's finishing record has been impressive all year, reaching the flag and scoring points in all but three of his 18 starts in 2013. Frank Thomas joined MBR at three events this season, racing at Zolder, Donington and last weekend's final round at Snetterton.
A delighted Mark Bailey said "It has been a good year. The main thing for us as a team, obviously performance is important, but reliability is equally important. Mechanically-wise it's been pretty handy. Until all the accidents happened at Snett, I was hoping Alice would finish every race in the season. It's unfortunate."
In the MBR garage have been some of the future engineers of British motorsport for the ninth year in a row thanks to his link up with motorsport colleges. Bailey believes his latest crop of students have been the best yet.
"We've been working with students since 2004. We started with universities and colleges, the guys this year have been very, very good. We are very hard on them, we normally take on four at the start of the season and if they don't cut the mustard they go for whatever reason. This year's been one of our best years, only once before have I ever got three students to the end and I've managed to do that out of the four we started with. I'm pretty pleased with that.
"The students I've got are all top drawer. My son started off the season, he's been with the team for three seasons and he's been handing over to Matt and Vicki. He's at Force India working on the engines which is great for him with the rule changes and he's also in their sort of mission control working on set-up and things. We've had students go to AP, and have guys at Force India and Mercedes."
Mark Bailey Racing's Mike Gale will take over the squad in 2014 racing under the Gale Force Racing banner.
Speaking of the handover, Bailey added "I'm happy to split it, the timing's right and it's good for Mike with him getting the premises. All in all it's best to go out on a high."
