Powell powers to opening Oulton win

Alice Powell confirmed her pace from F3 Cup qualifying to dominate the opening race of the season at Oulton Park this afternoon (Monday 1 April).

Alice Powell confirmed her pace from F3 Cup qualifying to dominate the opening race of the season at Oulton Park this afternoon (Monday 1 April).

The Mark Bailey Racing driver remained untroubled throughout the race, lapping at a monotonous pace, to build a massive lead of over 18 seconds by the checkered flag.

Alex Craven moved from fourth on the grid to finish second, with Mark Harrison finishing third having started fifth.

Powell led away from the start, ahead of James Cross, while Tristan Cliffe made a lightning get away to run in fourth place by the end of lap one. There was drama for Cross though, and he was unable to complete a lap, retiring through mechanical issues.  Newcomer Henry Chart was another early retirement with a spin at Brittens on the second lap.

By lap five, Powell lead by over eight seconds, while further back there was a tasty battle developing for seventh place between Dave Karaskas, Gino Ussi and Neil Harrison, with Ussi forcing his way past on lap lap eight.

The fight for third was also intensifying, with Mark Harrison, Cliffe and Robbie Watts all lapping closely.

Dave Karaskas claimed the Trophy class, ahead of James Ledamun.

But at the front it was Powell who remained untrobuled to take the win by 18.101s. Speaking afterwards she said: "It was a good race. I pushed hard for the first few laps but then held a steady pace to perserve the tyres for the next race. I had to keep pushing to maintain the gap, and I'm looking forward to the next race."
