Cliffe cruises to Brands GP win
A wretched start for Tristan Cliffe couldn't stop him doubling his win tally for the year with a comfortable win ahead of Toby Sowery at Brands Hatch Grand Prix.
A wretched start for Tristan Cliffe couldn't stop him doubling his win tally for the year with a comfortable win ahead of Toby Sowery at Brands Hatch Grand Prix. The double win means he's unbeaten on the full circuit in two years.
Louis Hamilton-Smith took third ahead of Oliver Rae, who wrapped up the Trophy 01 Class in the process. His Enigma Motorsport team-mate Henry Chart recovered from a spin to take fifth. Lee Morgan completed the top six after battling all race with Mark Harrison.
Stuart Wiltshire took seventh, well clear of Trophy Class runner Jonathan Weston-Taylor. Jacopo Sebastiani had the better of Nick Robinson for 10th, with Geoffrey Hoodless in 12th.
For the second time during the weekend, Cliffe was third car into Paddock Hill despite starting from pole. He was swamped by Chart and Sowery, and Chart squeezed around the outside up towards Druids for the lead. Sowery's inside line enabled him to pull through and only a few corners later Chart was back in third as Cliffe made the pass.
Much like he did in race one, Cliffe quickly closed in on Sowery and claimed the lead at Surtees on lap five. Sowery couldn't match Cliffe's pace, and soon fell away to 12 seconds adrift at the flag.
A poor third lap for Chart dropped him behind Hamilton-Smith, and Rae capitalised around the outside of Paddock Hill to move into fourth place. It got worse for Chart just a few laps later and he spun at Paddock Hill, losing two more places to the battling Harrison and Morgan. He recovered to pass them both but couldn't catch the fourth-placed Rae.
Morgan eventually pulled clear of Harrison to steal the final spot inside the top six.
The battle for 10th was quickly restarted after yesterday's entertainment, with Robinson starting the better of the two. Sebsastiani closed in and was able to pull away before the flag to round out the top 10.
Cliffe couldn't match his lap record from race one, which was good enough to secure the IWI Fastest Lap of the Weekend Award. His double win takes the championship fight on to Silverstone, where a sixth place for Sowery will wrap up the overall title.
