Toby Sowery dominated from pole on his F3 Cup debut, overcoming the early pressure from Tristan Cliffe to romp away by over 17 seconds.

Cliffe then diced with Oliver Rae for third, and Stuart Wiltshire benefited from the clashing Lee Morgan and Henry Chart to take third in class and fourth on the road.

When the lights went out though it was local racer Cliffe who got away quickest. He and Sowery took to Riches side-by-side, but Sowery's inside line gave him the advantage at Montreal. From there he never looked back. The lap record eluded him, but his fastest laps secured pole for Sunday's race two.

While Sowery was able to scurry away, Cliffe was soon under pressure from the fast-starting Rae. The pair jockeyed until Rae muscled up the inside of Riches. Cliffe attempted a reply at Brundle and Nelson, and he finally clung on around Bombhole. From there he was afforded a more comfortable run to the flag, eking out a two second gap by the flag.

Further back, Wiltshire had capitalised on a poor start from Henry Chart. Enigma Motorsport's Chart soon slipstreamed up behind Wiltshire down the Senna straight and ducked to the inside of Riches. Lee Morgan was doing likewise on Chart, and forced to head to the outside of Wiltshire leaving them three-abreast turning in. The trio never made it to Montreal: Morgan and Chart collided to leave Wiltshire able to capitalise.

A measured drive to the finish gave Wiltshire his first class podium in the championship. Tony Bishop couldn't close the gap to the Gale Force Racing driver after he was forced to take evasive action to escape the Chart and Morgan clash, and he for fifth.

A poor getaway for Nick Robinson left him on the back foot but he chased down new teammate John Ferguson to pinch the final spot in the top six at Agostini.

The race played out in the wake of the impressive Sowery, who was composed on the way to victory.
