Double victory at Spa stretches Sowery’s lead

Lanan Racing's F3 Cup rookie Toby Sowery continued his relentless championship charge at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, winning rounds seven and eight ahead of title rival Tristan Cliffe.
Carlin's British F3 representative, Peter Li Zhi Cong, joined the grid in the Invitational Class racing in a newer Dallara-Volkswagen F308, but he too was powerless to resist Sowery, coming home second both times.
Li appeared to have the outright race win wrapped up in round seven, but Sowery denied him on the very last lap by making the most of some tricky traffic to claim the lead. Sowery's move came sooner in round eight, holding on around the outside of the hairpin two laps from the end and then romping away.
Tristan Cliffe was second of the points scorers in both rounds, first claiming fourth on the road behind guest driver Struan Moore, also in the Invitational Class, before keeping a close watching brief on the leaders in third place in round eight. He threatened to make it a three-way fight for the lead, but lost the leaders among heavy traffic.
Oliver Rae impressed once again to secure the points for third, each time ahead of Lee Morgan, who enjoyed his best weekend in the championship so far. The reigning Formula Jedi champion visited the Cup 07 Class podium in both races.
Sowery's wins stretch him further clear of Cliffe in the points standings, having now won six of 2014's eight races.
Speaking after the weekend, Sowery said: "I'm over the moon. To beat such a big team that does F3 as a profession and with them in a newer car, it's quite an achievement for us boys.
"As Li was in the Invitation Class, he doesn't affect my championship. I thought we would just get past if we can and if we can't, keep it on the track and bring the car home. I managed to sneak around the outside at the hairpin, and with Tristan catching us I thought I had to try it. I'm really, really happy."
