Sowery on verge of title

F3 Cup champion elect Toby Sowery is calm ahead of a weekend that could see him tie up the 2014 championship with four races to spare.

If Sowery wins twice on his Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit debut and collects two of the three extra points on offer for pole and either fastest lap, Lanan Racing will have a second drivers' champion in as many years.

Sowery, 18, said: "It will always add a small amount of pressure knowing that I could be champion if I perform my best but I don't see that affecting me personally. If we don't have a perfect weekend we still have two more rounds so we are playing the same game as before: go out, keep it on the grey stuff and finish as best as we can.

"I've not done much at Brands Hatch at all apart from a day learning the track. It is a very enjoyable track so it will be a good weekend with a challenging track to overcome. Getting back in the car is always something to look forward to."

Sowery has only been off the top step of the podium twice this year, both times at Rockingham after losing out to Alice Powell. The last rounds at Oulton Park saw Sowery take his seventh and eighth wins of the season.

"Oulton was a tough weekend for us. We struggled with our dry pace more than usual, so had to change some of our setup to try and gain our pace back. Then for the racing it was wet, which was good for us as we have had a fair amount of wet running over the past few race weekends.

"Henry [Chart] was quick and so was Tristan [Cliffe]. Henry made some mistakes early in the races which allowed us to get past and put some quick laps in and I'm sure he will be quick at the next events, which should be good for racing."

With a maiden single seater title around the corner to add to his large collection of karting trophies, Sowery firmly believes the championship has given his career the best possible footing.

"I don't think I could have chosen a better place to start my career in racing. Driving an F3 car in my first season of cars is incredible and has been thoroughly enjoyable. Everyone involved in the F3 Cup team at Lanan has done a brilliant job.

"It has been an amazing first year for me so far."
