Sowery scores soaked Spa win

Toby Sowery secured a fifth win of the year at a sodden Spa-Francorchamps to claim round seven of the 2014 F3 Cup championship. Sowery passed Carlin Racing's Peter Li Zhi Cong on the final lap to claim an impressive outright win.
Tristan Cliffe collected a fourth Cup 07 Class second place of the season to keep tabs on Lanan Racing's championship hopeful, shadowing Li's fellow Invitational Class runner Struan Moore to the line. Oliver Rae was the third points-scorer ahead of Grays Motorsport's Lee Morgan, who picked up a best ever result of third in class.
The notorious Spa weather played its part, soaking the tarmac just as the cars headed for the grid requiring a wet race to be called. Slicks were replaced with wets, and the race began under safety car conditions.
When the safety car peeled in, Sowery was quick to pressurise Li, who's racing in a newer Dallara F308. Struan Moore in third ran wide in the La Source puddles allowing Cliffe to pull alongside, but the Omicron racer slotted in behind as the pair tackled Eau Rouge and Radillon.
As rain continued to pour and add to the vast spray, Sowery and Li duelled among the traffic. The gap fluctuated but it was rarely more than one and a half seconds as they took turns setting fastest lap. On the final lap, Sowery used that traffic perfectly to slide past Li to secure a landmark win.
The final lap charge also saw him land the extra point for fastest lap, even bettering Li's earlier benchmark.
Morgan, starting third in class and fifth on the road, struggled for grip, allowing Rae to slingshot past and focus on Cliffe up the road. Mark Harrison also lost out at the start, falling back behind Robbie Watts and Tony Bishop. Stuart Wiltshire soon joined that train before Tony Bishop spun off at Campus.
Watts used the cushion of a Monoposto car between himself and the chasing pack to secure fourth in class and seventh on the road ahead of Harrison and Wiltshire.
Sowery's win, and extra points for pole and fastest lap, puts more breathing space between Sowery and Cliffe, who's second place limited the damage to five points.
Round eight takes place on Sunday 29 June at 10:50 local time, with Li and Sowery on the front row ahead of Moore and Cliffe.
