Spa wars return for F3 Cup

F3 Cup returns to Spa-Francorchamps this weekend for the first time in two years, for rounds seven and eight of the 2014 series.

Toby Sowery of Lanan Racing has won four of the first six races of 2014, only losing out to returnee Alice Powell at Rockingham Motor Speedway in rounds five and six. Spa is another new circuit for the karting graduate to tackle, but he's excited by the challenge.

With Powell not making the trip to Belgium, the onus is back on Tristan Cliffe to close the gap to Sowery. The Omicron Motorsport racer, second in the standings, is returning to his 2013 setup for this weekend in a bid to reel in the runaway championship leader.

Oliver Rae has impressed so far in 2014, and so too has his Trophy 01 Class Dallara. Henry Chart drove the Enigma Motorsport-prepared car to the podium ahead of newer machinery twice at Silverstone in the absence of Rae, and at Rockingham, with Rae back in the car, it was again fighting it out at the front.

Monoposto Championship leader Robbie Watts is fielding his Dallara F306 for the first time in 2014 and will be hoping to transfer some of his success to F3 Cup, while Trophy Class runner James Ledamun returns for the first time since Brands Hatch GP last July.

After sitting out the rounds at Rockingham in May, Stuart Wiltshire will be Gale Force Racing's sole representative. The Essex driver secured a best-ever F3 Cup finish of third place at round one at Snetterton, and he knows and likes the Belgian track.

Mark Harrison, Tony Bishop and Lee Morgan were closely matched around Rockingham and provided some brilliant racing, though the latter will be wishing for better fortunes than he has encountered so far this season. There were glimpses of Morgan's pace when he set the third-fastest lap of race one behind Sowery and Powell, but a couple of unfortunate spins have undone his good work.

Last time F3 Cup took to the hilly Spa circuit, guest racer Alex Lynn was unmatched with two wins. This weekend sees more guest racers in the field with BRDC F4 racer Struan Moore partnering Sowery at Lanan Racing, and Carlin's British F3 prospect Li Zhi Cong making his debut. Both drivers will be racing in the Invitation Class.

F3 Cup will be sharing the grid with Monoposto at Spa this weekend (27-29 June). Qualifying takes place at 13:15 on Friday ahead of race one at 11:45 on Saturday and race two at 10:50 on Sunday.
