F3 Cup announces provisional 2016 calendar
The provisional 2016 F3 Cup Championship calendar has been announced today, with leading UK circuits Brands Hatch GP, Silverstone GP and Donington Park all retained
The provisional 2016 F3 Cup Championship calendar has been announced today (2 December), with leading UK circuits Brands Hatch GP, Silverstone GP and Donington Park all retained. 2015's revamped race format will continue and the newly announced F3 Open class will enable more drivers and teams to enjoy Formula 3 racing than ever before.
F3 Cup is set to be the only championship in the UK for contemporary Formula 3 cars again next season, and is arguably the fastest open-wheel championship in the country. Split into five classes, the championship will once again feature machinery constructed between 1981 and 2011. The new F3 Open class will allow competitors to run F3 cars manufactured from 2005 onwards with 'stock' 2000cc engines, to help reduce costs even further. Other F3 cars which fall outside these classes will still be allowed to race in the Invitation Class, at the organisers' discretion.
The championship's value-for-money ethos will continue with the revised race format introduced in 2015, which proved very popular with competitors. Three of the seven rounds will consist of three races spread over two days, with a pair of 15-minute sprint races and a single 20-minute feature race. The remaining rounds will feature two races over the weekend, including an exclusive F3 Cup grid on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit.
In addition to races at Brands Hatch, Silverstone and Donington Park, the championship will visit the Snetterton 300 circuit and Oulton Park. The annual overseas visit to Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium is also set to feature in June, in partnership with the Monoposto Racing Club.
David Scott, MSVR's Race Operations Manager, said: "F3 Cup has always prided itself on offering cost-effective yet exciting racing. The 2016 calendar will provide drivers with the chance to race on both current and former F1 circuits, as well as other premier national venues. The new F3 Open class will provide an even more affordable route to the grid, and with fresh interest in the championship already, F3 Cup is lining up for a landmark year!"
