Steely Aaron takes pole on return
As the fog lifted the F3 Cup emerged and gave us an enthralling qualifying session to sink our teeth into. The whole field went out at the start of qualifying, keen to get as many laps in as possible to get some heat into their tyres, and find the limits of the very cool track.
The F3 Cup cars emerged through the fog at Oulton Park to provide an enthralling qualifying session to kick off the 2015 season. The whole field went out at the start of qualifying, keen to get as many laps in as possible on a very cool track.
Aaron Steele drew first blood as he set the initial pace to claim provisional pole, a full two seconds ahead of his fellow championship protagonists. As tyre temperatures rose, the times started to tumble, with Henry Chart and Louis Hamilton-Smith trading the top spot with each lap that passed.
Half way through the session, the majority of the field came into the pits to make minor adjustments to the car and tyre pressures, before heading back out.
All drivers impressed as the session went on, with Adrian Holey and Daniel Tapinos making their F3 Cup debuts, putting in some impressive times in their F3 machinery.
Jacopo Sebastiani, who is also new to F3 Cup this season in his F311, had a solid session getting more laps under his belt in his new car. Jacopo will line up fifth for his first ever F3 Cup race.
The surprise of the session was undoubtedly Stuart Wiltshire, in his ex Vitali Bottas Dallara, who scored a career best fourth position, and is certainly one to watch for the first race.
Tony Bishop battled with low tyre temperature and new brake pads, but once everything was operating fully he started to slash his lap times, improving as each lap passed, but unfortunately ran out of time.
In the end, it was Aaron Steele who took the honours for the first race of the season, on his return to F3 Cup after a three year absence. Henry Chart will line up second on the grid with Louis Hamilton-Smith third.
Make sure you join us for the first race of the day which kicks off at 13:35, it's bound to be a cracker.
