Championship Leader Secures Pole Position in Final Qualifying Session

Cian Carey secured the all-important top spot for the first race of the championship decider weekend

F3 Cup's final qualifying session of 2018 took place late this afternoon, on a dry Silverstone GP circuit. Sadly George Line was unable to make the weekend but the entries were otherwise as published.

The returning Stephen Fitzpatrick was quick to establish the pace, but a very tight fight emerged quickly as the drivers found their strides. Championship leader Cian Carey was the first to set a proper flying lap, but within another lap the University of Wolverhampton Racing's Shane Kelly broke the two minute barrier to top the times.

Tony Bishop and Stephen Daly were next to go sub-two minutes, but Carey quickly responded, down to 1:57.735 and up to the top of the table again.

Patrick Jeans was next to impress, setting the fastest Sector One time but falling just 0.093s short of Carey over the whole lap.

Newcomer Stefano Leaney wasted no time making his presence felt, also entering the 1:57 zone, and with five minutes left on the clock he and the leader were separated by just 0.063s. In fact, going into the final laps the top four were only split by 0.099s.

As the last laps were logged after the chequered flag, the order settled with Carey on pole, joined by Leaney on the front row. Patrick Jeans had a fantastic session to secure third place, alongside Daly. The other two title contenders, Stuart Wiltshire and Shane Kelly, lined up fifth and sixth respectively. Baptiste Leonard, Tony Bishop, Philip Jeans, Stephen Fitzpatrick, Ben Cater and James Simons complete the grid.

F3 Cup's first 20 minute race of the weekend is at 12:00 tomorrow (Sunday) and is almost guaranteed to be a wet race. Live updates and timing will be available at - don't miss it!
