Champions Crowned at Celebration Evening
F3 Cup's 2018 champions were celebrated at Brands Hatch this weekend
F3 Cup's annual awards evening took place this weekend (Saturday 26th January) at the MotorSport Vision Centre at Brands Hatch, with overall champion Cian Carey and Teams' Champion Chris Dittmann Racing sharing the spotlight.
As is traditional, the top three Cup Class finishers were also awarded their prizes, including impressive silverware, a timepiece from championship timing partner Marchand Watch Company and race clothing from Stand 21. MSVR's Race Operations Manager David Scott and Marchand's Eric Brigham were on hand to present the awards to third place Shane Kelly (University of Wolverhampton Racing) and Carey. Sadly Stuart Wiltshire (CF Racing), who finished second overall, was unable to attend.
Speaking to host Alan Hyde, Kelly expressed his thanks to the UWR team, praising the students' commitment and enthusiasm for their F3 Cup campaign. Heading into their fourth year in the championship in 2019, a number of the students from previous years have used the experience to progress to careers in the motorsport industry, including a number of Formula 1 teams.
Collecting the Teams' Champions title, Chris Dittmann was joined on stage by his eponymous squad, and commended the hard work of both team and drivers, which included Philip and Patrick Jeans, Baptiste Leonard and 2012 Champion Dittmann himself, alongside Carey.
The culmination of the evening was the presentation of the overall championship trophy to Carey, along with a special trophy provided by Marchand and two PalmerSport days. Carey reflected on a tough campaign; from two DNFs in the first two races, to the abandoned final round due to torrential rain at Silverstone, he was never able to rest easy, but 11 podium finishes (including six outright wins) ultimately gave him the edge.
The 2019 Championship kicks off at Donington Park on 6/7 April - keep an eye on the website and social channels (@F3Cup) for the latest news as the new season approaches.
